Hidden Treasure of the Month!
May, 2005 – Positano
While the Amalfi Coast has been famous worldwide among knowledgeable travelers for many, many years, it was not until the mid-1960’s that U.S. travelers seemed to have “discovered” the incredible charms of Positano. And it is still worth rediscovering today!
Together with the towns of Amalfi and Ravello, the ruins of Pompei, the island of Capri, the sun, the beaches, and the shopping, there can be no doubt as to why we often say that this is the gods’ favorite location in the entire Western World. To top it off, the hospitality found here is the warmest you will find anywhere in Italy. And the food? Just perfect – even just a basic “caprese,” simple sliced tomato, fresh mozzarella (unlike anything you will ever taste in the U.S.), with fresh basil and extra virgin olive oil, accompanied by a glass of chilled white wine from Campania. Or “spaghetti con le zucchini” at Mariagrazia’s, a small waterfront restaurant at Marina del Cantone, just a short boat ride from Positano. After the spaghetti, try their sliced yellow peaches in chilled white wine… You get the picture.

Positano is an incredibly colorful fishing village which climbs the hill in steps, with its oldest houses in the upper part of the village, decorated with Baroque stuccoes. The main street, Via Pasitea, winds down to the sea through the heart of town, with its narrow alleys, houses with vaulted roofs, terraces, and tiny charming gardens. Lots of brightly colored articles and clothes are displayed inside and outside the many shops along the streets, and local artisans will even make sandals for you while you wait.
Two of our favorite places to stay on the Amalfi Coast are located in and just outside of Positano: La Fenice and the Villa Rosa.

As described by Nicole Franchini in the Karen Brown guide, “Guests leave their cars on the main road and climb the arbored steps to discover the white villa hidden amid lush Mediterranean vegetation. Costantino and Angela heartily welcome new arrivals on the shady front terrace, where a Continental breakfast is served each morning. Seven luminous bedrooms, three with terrace and marvelous sea views... Eight more rooms of varying dimensions, most with terraces, reached by many steps down from the road, are built separately into the side of the cliff and have colorful, tiled floors and basic furnishings. Descending yet more steps, you’ll come to the curved seawater pool and Jacuzzi carved against the rock…” You’ll be sorely tempted no never even leave the property during your stay!

On the other hand, the charming Villa Rosa is located right in town, on the upper street with breathtaking views over the entire village. As described by Nicole in the KB guide, “Villa Rosa opened its doors seven years ago after restoration work by local couple, Virginia and Franco Caldiero, who own a clothing store and ceramic store in town (the house has always been in Virginia’s family). The 150-year-old villa, built into the cliffside and hidden behind bougainvillea vines high above the road right in town, is on three levels. The twelve bedrooms are spread over all three floors, each having access to the large front terraces which are divided by plants and grapevine-covered pergolas for privacy. Picturesque views of Positano’s colorful houses and the spectacular coastline are enjoyed from any point.” You will especially appreciate the warm personalized welcomes provided by Velia and Angela, at the reception desk every day!
