We are not going to tell you that Tuscany is a “hidden treasure.” After all, this is one of the most romanticized regions in the western world – and justifiably so. Nor are we going to suggest that the medieval city of Siena is a “hidden treasure” either. It is much too well-known by experienced travelers to Italy to be considered as a new discovery.

However, in view of the fact that many of our clients are first-time visitors to Italy, we feel fully justified in nominating a number of otherwise well-visited sites as “hidden treasures.” This month we are indicating one of the most fascinating cathedrals in the world – which just happens to be found in the ancient Tuscan city of Siena!

The Siena Duomo was begun in the middle of the 12th century, and was originally meant to rival the already magnificent cathedral in Florence (Siena’s primary city-state rival in those days of obscure political differences between Guelfs and Ghibellines). It was eventually completed in the late 14th century, but never achieved its original goal of outshining the Florence Duomo.

Rather than overshadowing Florence, the Siena Duomo developed its own very distinctive personality – which today makes it a worthy tourist destination from all points in Tuscany. We strongly recommend a visit to this unusual church – and to take a stroll over to the world-famous Piazza del Campo, as well.

It is in this unique piazza that the famous Palio horse race is run twice each year (in July and August), a picturesque contest among the city’s 17 “contrade” (or parishes). Folklore and excitement at its best (and crowds at their worst!). If you are fortunate enough to procure tickets for the Palio, it is worth the hassle. If not, there are 363 other days of the year when a visit to Siena is still the highlight of any trip into the heart of Tuscany!

When it comes to staying in Tuscany, there are many charming alternatives – and it is our job to know about them. One of our many personal favorites is located near San Casciano, less than twenty kilometers south of Florence, off the main route to Siena – and less than an hour from the heart of Siena itself.

We are talking about the Villa Il Poggiale, a luxurious villa where you will feel like a guest in a private home. As described in the Karen Brown “Charming Inns & Itineraries” guide, the Villa Il Poggiale is: an intimate, elegant boutique hotel, opened in the spring of 2003. It has been transformed from a private country home into a an exclusive inn, with no expense spared on beauty, comfort, and modern conveniences. A full buffet breakfast featuring homemade cakes and local specialties is served overlooking the garden, which leads down to the swimming pool with its extraordinary views of the picture-perfect landscape.”

We especially like its frescoed bedrooms, each with its own unique charm and personality – as well as the warm personal welcomes you will receive from Caterina (the Director of this truly special property), Monica, and Gemma.
