In recent years, many travelers to Italy have discovered the suggestive charms of the Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coast, north of the port city of La Spezia. With its evocative walking paths, linking the five small fishing villages which have provided the name for this small region (The Five Lands), Cinque Terre certainly deserves its recent popularity among foreign visitors. (But, as we advise our clients, please be sure to bring a deck of cards with in case it rains... because there's not much else to do there in bad weather).

Which is why this month's hidden treasure is the small, picturesque village of Tellaro... an ideal base for visiting the Cinque Terre. Tellaro is built on a rocky point on the coast of the Gulf of Poets to the south of La Spezia, and is just 14 miles from the Cinque Terre. It is also just a stone's throw from the town of Lerici, made famous by Shelley and Byron, and a mere half hour from Forte di Marmi, perhaps Tuscany's most famous beach resort.

Tellaro itself is an incredibly charming, old European seaside village, criss-crossed with narrow stone walkways, meandering down to the town church, perched right above the sea. Small shops, local bars, and non-stop atmosphere... even if it rains!

By far our favorite place to stay in the area is the Locanda Miranda, located right on the only road leading into Tellaro.

The Locanda Miranda

As described by Nicole Franchini in the Karen Brown guide, "Husband and wife team Giovanna and Angelo have their own inimitable and ever-varying style of cooking based exclusively on fresh seafood (no meat), which is present in the inexhaustible series of antipasti and pasta plates. Angelo has received plenty of press and praise (Michelin star) for these extraordinary dishes. Meals are served in one of the newly renovated dining rooms, pleasantly appointed with scattered antiques. In the same vein are the bedrooms, most with a gulf view, which Aunt Miranda used to rent out and are now in the capable hands of son, Alessandro. Guests have a cozy living room with fireplace for relaxing. Upon prior request, personalized cooking courses can be arranged."
